Father forced to deliver own baby on maternity ward after midwife goes AWOL |

In 2007 when A&E servces were transferred from Burnley General Hospital to the Royal Blackburn hospital it was anticipated the Blackburn hospital would struggle to cope with the additional intakes.
Overcrowded wards and under-staffing may have led to patient neglect in the past with many staff seemingly expected to to do the task of several. The Daily Mail today reported a father was forced to deliver his own baby in a maternity ward after the midwife abandoned them. Thomas Howard, 33, frantically pressed the emergency buzzer to alert staff at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, for help when he realised the newborn's arrival was imminent.
